UPDATE ON DETROIT'S AFRICA TOWN PROPOSAL

No plans have been finalized, but the proposal continues to headline in the Detroit area, with splits along racial lines. It is worth noting that the City Council President, Maryann Mahaffey, is a white women who voted in favor of the proposal.

No proposal is complete, no financing finalized and no land identified, but there is plenty of emotion over a Detroit City Council plan to create a black business district known as African Town. Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick's administration is distancing itself from the plan; council members want to separate the rhetoric behind the plan from what they say is a need for the city to help black entrepreneurs, and Detroiters share mixed -- albeit heated – feelings.

Detroit Free Press Story.

I think it's one of the dumbest ideas I've ever heard about and frankly insulting," said Oakland County Executive L. Brooks Patterson. "How wouldresidents of Detroit feel if I would propose having a Honky Town in Oakland? I would be run out of office, and rightfully so.

This white suburban county commisioner is comparing Africa town to Honky town. What is Honky town? Is not honky a derogatory terminology? Thus, is he suggesting that Africa is derogitory term...in his mind...does Africa = the "N" word in his mind...thus making Africa town connotations = Honky town connotations?

This is the type of white thinking that makes it so hard for blacks people to rise up under their domination and control.

I definetly believe that white folk are calling "Africa Town" "Nigger Town" and will do so when it is established. So it is not suprising that this white dude would compare it to Honky town.

The thing about it is that this dude has power. This is not just some poor redneck talking. He has top political power of Oakland County...which is one of the ten richest counties in America, with about 1.2 million people. He has much political power in the region and state. The fact that someone of his stature, would set the tone with such derogatory analogy tells you alot about the racism in the area...where he feels comfortable enough to say something like that.

And herein lies one of the greatest continuing problems for Blacks. Why is it that those in power and in positions to do the most good for society turn out to be idiots like "... this dude..."?
